The Netgear LG6100D is part of our ISP's package here in Maine if you want wireless internet. Because I just received it today I have yet to dive into the gui. Worst of all I underestimated the signal: I'm a 1/4 mile away from their nearest tower yet I only get one bar. I've only just begun.

I've used FreedomPop's Hub Burst for home internet for a few years. As the Hub Burst relies on WiMax which will shut down in a couple of weeks, FreedomPop has offered me a great deal on this device. Unfortunately the plans for this device do not meet my needs, but I do notice that the device is based on Linux. Do you have any idea if the firmware can be flashed with something like OpenWRT (even if the LTE features didn't work under OpenWRT, if wifi, ethernet, and the USB port functioned it getting the device would be a good value to me - bonus if I could use it with an open firmware and still use it as a LTE failover router).

So it's been a couple months since the last update. Anything new to post?

Also, I'm not entirely clear on the available data plans for the device. I can't even find it (or any other fixed hotspot) on the Sprint website. I have been a Sprint customer for 15 years with unlimited everything since they began selling it. How do these work?

Hi Patrick,

I hope you don't mind, but since I replied to you on Facebook I'm gonna paste that here for anyone else's reference:

--

No worries on the direct message.. Always happy to help out.

It looks like the latest firmware fixed some of the security issues, and most of them were on the LAN / WiFi side of the device anyhow. So I don't think it's a huge security risk for home use (though for business it could be a problem). I'm a little on the paranoid side with stuff like this (if you couldn't tell), so I put the 6100D on a dedicated subnet and port on my main router. If you want an extra layer, you could always stick another router/firewall between your network and the 6100D.

I wish I could tell you that the new firmware has solved the igmp proxy problem, but I've seen it a couple of times even after updating.

And I'm not sure about the connection freezing. For all the problems I've had with it, at least it's been reliable for me so far.

Hey Scott,
Thanks for this extensive write up! I wish I had found it before I signed a 2 year contract with Sprint. Tell me, do you think this router is dangerous to use as a primary gateway? I'm in an unfortunate area (dead-end road) that gives me very little choice in broadband. 4G/LTE or HughsNet. I've read that Hughsnet is awful, and doesn't work well with VPN so I'm hoping to use this router with an external antenna (the same one you reviewed from 4G Antenna Store) as my primary internet. I would love to hear your thoughts on whether this would work well or not. The main concerns I have right now are 3 of the things you pointed out:
1) The chewing of data at idle
2) The igmpproxy packet blast over LAN which totally disables the router very frequently (I think this is my current primary problem)
3) The security holes
